Art In FLUX launches THE DIORAMA PROJECT: City of Curiosities
A public art installation on a construction site at the NE corner of 121st and Frederick Douglass Blvd, New York, NY
Curated by Leanne Stella
Art In FLUX engaged 9 uptown artists for the project. Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez painted the mural backdrop and 8 artists created dioramas of sorts. Each artist was given thirty days, a 24” x 30” x 6” box with an open front, and an overall theme (City of Curiosities) within which to work. Silverock Development provided financial support for materials and artists stipends. The installation will remain on the construction site for approximately 2 months and each diorama will be auctioned off to support more uptown public art projects.
Featured Artists: Dominant Dansby, Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez, Leah Poller, Leon Johnson, Leslie Jimenez, Ruben Natal-San Miguel, Sui Park, Suprina and Uday K. Dhar.
About Dominant Dansby:
Dominant Dansby is a multimedia artist who trained at the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he was a Silas H. Rhodes Scholar. His ongoing collage series is deeply influenced by his relationship to jazz and the idea of communicating through the exchange of energy. The intense focus on process, combining texture, dimension and energy is created from a variety of papers and media, including recycled drawings from his studies of drapery and wood, work that is more physical, natural and raw than his earlier drawings.
Dominant has exhibited at The Montclair Art Museum, N'Namdi Contemporary in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach, the FLUX Art Fair, NYC and exhibitions throughout New York and New Jersey.
