Staten Island Ferry is included in “The Black Photographers Annual 1973,” a four-volume anthology published between 1973 and 1980 that served as a showcase for black photographers, who had few places to display their work in such a sweeping, comprehensive way.

I was fortunate to be included in this historical publication (Vol.1, page 33) during my junior year at Cooper Union. My mentor, Vernon Grant, encouraged me to enter my photographs. Honored to be among the greats in the 1st Volume, including; Roy DeCarava, Louis Draper, Beuford Smith, Ming Smith, Chuck Stewart, Frank Stewart, Moneta Sleet, Jr., John Pinderhughes, Adger Cowans, Mel Dixon and Anthony Barboza. - Roger C. Tucker III

This image is among hundreds included in the anthology that served as a showcase for black photographers, who had few places to display their work in such a sweeping, comprehensive way.

The annual, for which Beuford Smith was a founding editor, is getting renewed attention thanks to an exhibition through October 3, 2017 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, in Richmond, which recently digitized and posted all four volumes on its website. |click here to view all four volumes: vmfa.museum/library/bpa/
