DOMINANT DANSBY

Dominant began exploring his artistic talents working in a variety of mediums early in life. By 17 years old, the young painter and illustrator was recognized as a national finalist of the NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. Dominant received four, first place honors in the 2005 North Jersey Student Art Show for his drawings and works in oil and pastel, charcoal and mixed media, and received the 2005 NJ Governor's Award for Art Education.

Dominant trained at the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he was a Silas H. Rhodes Scholar. His ongoing collage series is deeply influenced by his relationship to jazz and the idea of communicating through the exchange of energy. The intense focus on process, combining texture, dimension and energy is created from a variety of papers and media, including recycled drawings from his studies of drapery and wood, work that is more physical, natural and raw than his earlier drawings.

Dominant was a studio assistant to the artist Willie Cole for two years before working as an art preparator at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City. Dominant has exhibited at N'Namdi Contemporary in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach, the FLUX Art Fair, NYC and exhibitions throughout New York and New Jersey.
