“Exhibiting art to celebrate Juneteenth is a powerful act of reclaiming the narrative about our resilience and inviting dialogue about our pursuit of cultural identity. This exhibition celebrates a significant moment in history and highlights the ongoing contributions of African American artists to our cultural landscape.” - Donald Hilliard Jr., D.Min.

These four artists of color offer an empowering experience of dolls, dreams, and divine inspiration. Most know Donald Hilliard, Jr. as a profound leader in the Christian Church. Away from ministry though, he paints in his home studio, honing a practice in abstract expressionism. He began painting in 2006 and has built an enthusiastic following of collectors who are energized by the subtle symbolism in his work. Having created more than 60 paintings, his artistic message has evolved and resonates intimately with viewers.

This exhibition includes a mix of Hilliard’s paintings and mixed media works, each telling a unique story of faith, hope and upward mobility.

A retrospective exhibition of Hilliard’s art is also showing at the Tucker Contemporary Art Gallery, 400-422, Suite 417, Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove, NJ, 07009 until June 30, 2024.
